South Swell

Up at sunrise on Wednesday morning to capture these scences on Maui's south shore. The early birds got the worm so to speak with relatively uncrowded waves and glassy faces. By 8 AM, things were packed, as you can see in the last photo.

This stand up paddler was ripping it up.

Almost barrelled.
It got crowded in a hurry.

A few street scenes from a rainy day in Honolulu...

Strip of old school watering holes near Chinatown in Honolulu. Smith's Union Bar had old timer's in it, sipping Miller Hi Life under year round Christmas lights string above the bar.

Live Nude Girls. Boarded up and out of business. The newest game in Nikki's Arcade was a Dolly Parton pinball circa 1982.
Dried fish in Chinatown.

We found the old hotel that Stephan stayed in during the South Pacific trip in the late 1990's.

Another Maui Day...

... not so windy at Kanaha with trade winds largely shut down. Some good rides to be had, though. Rest of the forecast: sunny and pleasant.

New Year's Eve Hike

Maui's last volcanic eruption was around 1790. The vent that most of this lava came from is called "Kalua o Lapa" and it is accessible via a faint trail that begins near the "end of the road" at La Perouse Bay. These are a handful of images from a New Year's Eve hike. Weather conditions were suitably bleak and in keeping with the desolate landscape. Although, as you can see there are always a few tenacious plants striking a foothold.
